SRK pays Rs 27 cr advance tax
Shah Rukh Khan will be the highest income-tax payer from Bollywood for the second year in a row. He has paid advance taxes of Rs 27 crore till December 15, 2007, said sources, putting his income for 2007-08 at over Rs 100 crore. It is a glittering jump from the money he made the previous fiscal when he paid a modest Rs 18 crore in tax. 2007 has been a particularly prosperous year for Shah Rukh Khan, who has often called himself “priceless’’. He has not only had two mega hits under his belt - Chak De, India and Om Shanti Om , which he also produced - but also earned Rs 1 crore for every episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati . In the income-tax stakes, SRK is far ahead of the competition. Hrithik Roshan, who paid Rs 15 crore last year, had no releases in 2007 though his endorsement list has grown longer. Aamir Khan, who paid Rs 6 crore last year, released only one film, Taare Zameen Par , and is known to have taken the distribution rights as part of his remuneration. He has paid advance taxes worth Rs 3 crore While Amitabh Bachchan paid Rs 8 crore in income tax last year, his advance tax payment until December 15, 2007 was only Rs 1.8 crore. Bachchan, who is said to have upped his fee in 2008, is no more among the highest paid actors but his endorsement roster is still a blue-chip one. Among those who have paid a high advance tax this fiscal are Akshay Kumar (Rs 7 crore, although there have been media reports in the recent about the actor paying tax of Rs 26 crore) and Himesh Reshammiya (Rs 2.5 crore). The singer charges Rs 5.5 crore as a composer and actor. Abhishek Bachchan has paid Rs 3.7 crore (much higher than his returns the previous year) while his wife Aishwarya Rai has paid Rs 1.6 crore. Close behind Rai is actor Kareena Kapoor with Rs 1 crore in advance tax. On the corporate entertainment front, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Pvt Ltd paid advance taxes worth Rs 70 crore. They have done the maximum buying of films in 2007 including hits like Om Shanti Om and Taare Zameen Par . Hindustan Thompson was next (Rs 6 crore) followed by Balaji Telefilms (Rs 4.5 crore), Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies (Rs 3 crore) and Amitabh Bachchan’s company AB Corporation (Rs 2.4 crore). Eros Entertainment, which bought the worldwide distribution rights of Om Shanti Om for a whopping Rs 70 crore from Shah Rukh Khan, had deducted Rs 7 crore in tax deducted at source in this transaction alone.

Indian Movies
In India, cinema came into existence in the year 1896, on July 7, when Lumière Brothers’ showed six short films at Watson Hotel, Mumbai. Three years later, Harischandra Sakharam Bhatwadekar, shot and demonstrated two short films. Thereafter several attempts were taken in the early part of the 20th century to make films and stage plays. In the year 1913, the first intrinsic silent feature film named ‘Raja Harishchandra’ (3700 feet long) was released and it was a huge success. It was directed by Dhundiraj Govind Phalke (1870 - 1944) affectionately called Dadasaheb Phalke, a successful painter more popularly the 'Father of Indian Cinema'. He got inspired by seeing the movie ‘The Life Of Christ’ on a trip to London. Indian film industry blossomed with the introduction of sound in the year 1931 when the first talkie film called ‘Alam Ara’ released, directed by Ardeshir Irani, later dubbed into Hindi and Urdu. There on the film industry was splited on language lines where Hindi mainly being the North and Tamil, Telugu in South. In today’s era, Bollywood is known as ‘Hindi Cinema’. The name ‘Bollywood’ is an amalgamation of ‘Bombay’ (the old name of Mumbai) and ‘Hollywood’ (the center of the U.S.A. film industry). It’s a colloquial name given to the Mumbai based Hindi Film Industry in India and is considered to be the hub of Indian cinema.Indian movies are mainly classified as musicals. Movies are hardly made without any song or dance numbers. Indian audiences want their money worth it by watching a full entertainer. Indian commercial films are of two to three hours long with an intermission in whatever regional center they are made. They tend to be melodramatic and sentimental. Indian movies also features romance, comedy, action, suspense, and other generic elements. Apart from commercial cinema, there is also Indian cinema that aspires to seriousness or art. People in India call them 'Art' films. The primary difference between American and Indian commercial cinema, is that Indian film usually feature periodic song and dance routines, which, in a good movie, are expected to move the story. Songs are sung by professional playback singers and lip synched by dancing actors and actresses. Renowned singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, K. L. Saigal, Suraiyya, Noor Jehan has recorded many songs for Indian cinemas.People from various parts of India take part in Indian movies. Thousands of actors and actresses are already working in Indian cinema and thousands are waiting eagerly to get a break in the stardom. Only a few people became national icons like Amitabh Bachchan, who was voted the "greatest star of stage or screen" by a millennium poll conducted by the BBC. He is the first Indian actor to be featured in Madame Tussaud’s wax museum in London. Apart from him there are big stars like Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan who has made the most of their fame. Directors like Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, Shyam Benegal, Mehboob, Satyajit Ray (got an ‘Oscar’ for the Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award) have left behind an indelible mark in the Indian celluloid.Budgets of Indian cinema are modest by Hollywood standards. Sets, costumes, special effects and cinematography were less than world-class up until 1990s. From there on Indian cinema has taken a long plunge in increasing its standards and to be at par with Hollywood. Today funds are coming from private distributors, financers and few large studios. Film sequences today are shot overseas and that has proved a huge box office hit. Although Bollywood is suffering from widespread copyright infringement, where it is still one of the richest industries where a huge amount comes from overseas film rights.Like other film industries, Indian cinemas also have their share of accolades, Filmfare Awards being the most prestigious among them all. The first Filmfare Awards was started in 1953 by the Indian Screen Magazine ‘Filmfare’. There are other awards like Zee Cine Awards, Star Screen Awards, Stardust Awards, IIFA Awards, Apsara Awards et al. Award ceremonies are usually a star studded with a lot of glam and glitter where the events are lavishly staged spectacles, featuring singing, dancing, and lots of stars and starlets. In 1973, the Indian government has sponsored the National Film Awards and it also gives the Dadasaheb Phalke Award annually as recognition of a lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. The award is in memory of Dadasaheb Phalke, as a tribute to the Father of Indian cinema. The Indian film industry is one of the largest in the world. Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad is the world's largest production complex and the biggest movie studio in the world. India also features the cheapest cost of tickets in the world. Indian cinema is supported mainly by the vast cinema going Indian public, although Indian films have been gaining increasing popularity in the rest of the world — given the large Indian diaspora in English speaking countries at large.

Rajni's short and sweet gift for 2008... and its not 'Robot'
The media went rabid last week. Just as they unerringly go bonkers everytime Thalaivar's new project is announced, but this time around, the surprise quotient was up a couple of notches. Surprise for the fact that Shankar's darling idea, destined for a place way back in his "idea cupboard",destined to sleep among mothballs after having got the ceremonious boot from SRK and Aamir Khan suddenly found its place back, right in the middle of media circus. All thanks to Rajnikanth. With Thalaivar in the picture, literally and figuratively, production executives and distributors are back to dreaming Dollars, and the production budget just went out of the back window, never to return and worry the Director anymore and everyone is back to dreaming in Crores now. The signs are healthy. Good. And close to the heels of ROBOT, Rajnikanth announced something else that in the end is going to give him, more creative satisfaction than his next Million Dollar Project. This little note,my dear Constant Viewer,is about that little gesture. Rajnikanth is going to remake Katha Parayumbol, a Malayalam movie now running to packed houses and rave critical acclaim in Kerala, written by Srinivasan,Director/Storyteller Extraordinaire' under the Kavithalaya banner, owned by Rajni's mentor, the famed K.Balachander. And he plans it to be released by June/July before the shooting for Robot gets underway.Katha Prayumbol is the heartwarming story of a deeply cherished friendship between a village barber and the reigning Movie Superstar who comes to shoot for a movie in the quaint village where the barber lives a step above poverty with his wife and daughters. Its a poignant, bitter-sweet and heartwarming tale laced with subtle yet scalding doses of self-deprecating humor that can only come form the talented hands of Srinivasan. Anyone who has been an ardent follower of his movies can watch out for the famed Srini's Sarcasm that usually has the- powers -that -be squirming in their seats. It was Srinivasan's acclaimed Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam that Priyadarshan remade to Yeh Tera Ghar, Yeh Mera Ghar some pirated years ago.The original roles of the barber, played by Srinivasan and the Superstar played by Mammootty will be reprised by Pasupathy and Thalaivar in its Tamil avatar. And he has roped in P.Vasu to direct this movie, and have it released by mid -2008. Music is handled by Vidyasagar.P.Vasu is no stranger to remaking classics from Malayalam, and that too with Rajnikanth in the lead role. The last one he did was Chandramukhi. Enough said. Even if he customizes it to the regional flavor, hopefully much wouldn't be lost in the spirit of the movie as its such a simple, warm movie. The climax of the movie is being touted as one of the best in the Malayalam movie history and it revolves around the Superstar. Rajnikanth zeroed in on the potential of a remake after watching the preview with Srinivasan, who was his junior in Film Institute, and is said to have embraced him, choking for words of appreciation. For all of Thalaivar's fans whose world now has found a new Sun called Robot to revolve around till its release might be in for a little disappointment on the visibly 'small' scale of the movie.May it be. But, a Rajnikanth's movie is always a healthy sign for the economics of the industry. They dont' call him a one-man industry for nothing. But even Rajnikanth loves to take a break from the usual Rajni movies. This, my dear Constant Rajni Fan, will be one of them !!!
My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves - Music Review
Album: My Name Is Anthony GonsalvesMusic Director: Pritam Chakraborty, Sachin-Jiggar, Himesh ReshammiyaSingers: Sunidhi Chauhan, KK, Shaan, Remo Fernandes, Dj Amit Das, Amit KumarRatings: **E. Niwas is ready to present My Name is Anthony Gonsalves. In an attempt to do everything right for his film, the director brings on board music wonders like Pritam and Himesh Reshammiya. He even ropes in new composer, Sachin-Jiggar for one track. But all his efforts go down the drain. The album starts off with Sachin-Jigar's 'Allah Beli'. Romantic with a slight base in soft rock and jazz, 'Allah Beli' doesn't turn out to be a bad attempt. However, the song sung by KK cannot be termed a chartbuster. The next number is 'Jaane maula jaane khuda'. The moderate track wouldn't hurt anybody but skipping it wouldn't hurt either. Amit Kumar renders to Pritam's composition who, for one, hasn't given his best here. Even Sameer's lyrics do not heat up this lukewarm number. Then follows 'Tere bina'. Sunidhi Chauhan takes up the mike for the number composed by Pritam. An impressive track would be expected from a composer-singer duo of such mettle, but the team clearly fails to do so. Overall, the track just fizzles out.Surprisingly, it is Himesh Reshammiya who manages to break this chain of unexciting numbers. His composition, 'Tum mile' stirs the senses. Sunidhi and KK pair up to render the number that features several key instruments.'Ya baba' is like those typical dance numbers that first appear in movies and are later played in clubs for the hip-shaking, Bollywood music lovers. Pritam hasn't worked hard on this song which ends up spoiling the singers' chances as well. Sameer appears average with his lyrics and Sunidhi and Shaan can't do much to impress the masses.Himesh Reshammiya is the winner among the trio of composers roped in for the album. While Sachin-Jigar show promise, Pritam is most disappointing. For someone known for belting out hits like Jab We Met and Life... In A Metro, My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves wouldn't be a career highlight.
2007 Hindi film awards
The year 2007 ended on a brilliant note with the release of "Taare Zameen Par". It started off with a highly successful film in the name of "Guru". We had the hutke movies like "Chak De India" rake in a lot of moolah as well. At the same time we had typical masala movies like "Om Shanthi Om" and the comedy flicks like "Welcome", "Heyy Baby", "Partner", "Bheja Fry" and dare I say "Cheeni Kum". We also had duds like "Nishabd" and "RGV ki Aag" from the usually reliable Ram Gopal Varma. Even Yash Raj films came up with a dud like "Jhoom barabar jhoom". There were the critically acclaimed commercial failures like "Ek chaalis ki last local", "Dharm" and "Manorama six feet down under". There were those that were neither critically acclaimed nor were they ever poised for commerical success "Eklavya" is one I can clearly remember. Let us look at who takes away the honours for the 2007 Hindi film awards as decided by me! Best art direction: Omung Kumar (Sawariya)Best dialogue: Sanjeev Dutta (Life In A... Shah Rukh Khan - Interview
He's Bollywood's latest obsession – the badshah of Bollywood, the king of tinsel town. For a decade and a half, Shah Rukh Khan's been ruling the roost in the film industry. You'd think age would come with decline. But post-40, SRK's popularity only seems to be increasing, as are his fortunes. The year 2007 was especially good for King Khan – both Chak De! India and Om Shanti Om collected mind-boggling amounts. There's another thing that keeps Shah Rukh much above the rest – sharp business acumen. SRK's Red Chilies made a killing on Om Shanti Om and he used visible platforms to promote the film, even drawing flak for it. Nevertheless, the marketing earned the desired results. Now, King Khan is line producing another film My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves. A chat with the actor at the music release of the film:How come you attended the music release of a film with no significant cast? I come here to check if the newcomers are better than me. If they are, I have to work harder. If not, I'll just go away happy ( laughs). Seriously speaking, I came because a lot of close friends are involved in the project. It's a very talented team and I am here to convey my best wishes. It's a good film and I am sure it will do well. I hope it turns out to be the biggest hit of the year because of my favorite Mithun Chakraborty, who has inspired a lot of people like me to do better. So, you're a fan of Mithun Chakraborty…I have been his fan since childhood, ever since I saw Mriguya. I am a fan of Gunmaster G9. It was my dream to work with him but by the time I entered the film industry, he had launched his hotel and moved to Ooty. He doesn't know that the first film shooting I saw was at Juhu Circle from 9 pm to 2 am when he came, gave his shot and left. I am grateful to him for doing a song sequence in OSO. He is a wonderful actor and has that star quality. We hear the hero in My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves, Nikhil Dwivedi, resembles you… I don't think any actor can resemble me. Who has six-pack abs like mine? (laughs) On a serious note, I don't think it's fair to compare actors. Everyone has his own identity. When Mithun came in, he started with Mriguya and went on to do James Bond-type roles and Gunmaster G9. I can assure you there are people better than him, taller than him and better looking than him but they will never be Mithun. He's carved his own niche. About Nikhil, he will go through five stages. First is when people will ask – 'Who is Nikhil Dwivedi?' Second when they will say 'Get me Nikhil Dwivedi'. The third stage is when they will say 'Get me a Nikhil Dwivedi type' and the fourth stage – which I am in right now – is when they will say 'Get me a younger Nikhil Dwivedi'. And the last stage is again when the say 'Who is Nikhil Dwivedi?'. The film also stars Amrita Rao… I call her the 'little sweetheart'. She is small in size but big in stature. A great actress, a great dancer. My Name is Anthony Gonsalves is a strange name for a movie… I think it's a brilliant title. It has lyricism like the old song. There is a bit of naughtiness too. When E Niwas told me about the title I liked it very much and I was hoping that the film isn't made and I could use the title for my own production. But they worked hard and made the film. ( laughs) Wouldn't that make people think of Amitabh Bachchan? Obviously, it would remind you of him and not Om Prakash. Lots of titles are used from songs but I think this is a tribute to Amitabh in a certain sense. This film is very different and as far as I know it is like Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. There is a sweet, poignant sensibility to it. You are the line producer of the movie. What made you do it? When Sahara, E Niwas and T-Series decided they wanted to make the film, they told me. Since they are close friends, I decided to get involved. They are new to production, so our team helped in line producing the film. Whatever guidance we could give them, we gave and we also learnt a lot in the process. Right now films don't need big budgets but good talent and hard work. My company also learnt from E Niwas how to make a wonderful film without spending too much money.
Hindi Song | Sunday (2007)
What if one day went missing from your life?? That's the the tagline of Sunday. The answer to that question depends on who you ask. If you ask a lazy nobody like me who has spent days without doing anything meaningful, the answer would be 'So #$%&*@# what!!' But Bill Gates will have a different answer for you. Anyhow, Sunday is a film by Rohit Shetty and stars Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Ayesha Takia, Irfaan Khan and Anjana Sukhani. The average, not-so-special songs of Sunday are composed by DJ Suketu and Shibani Kashyap. Movie Review: Halla Bol
In the 1990s, rape, violence, power, crime, fraud and abuse -- issues that concern us daily, nationally as well as internationally, were being depicted on the Hindi screen with unfailing regularity. Films that raised a voice and raised an issue faded into oblivion because a different genre [comedy] gradually took over. The issues concerning the common man remained dormant on the Hindi screen.
But Rajkumar Santoshi raises one pertinent issue with HALLA BOL. A lot has been said and written about the film bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Jessica Lal murder case. Does HALLA BOL attempt to recreate the ghastly incident on celluloid? More on that later!
What's noteworthy is that Santoshi succeeds in stirring and pricking your conscience. The accomplished storyteller, who started off with a bang with GHAYAL, DAMINI and GHATAK, films that raised a voice and issues, lost his touch in between, although he appealed greatly in THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH in the intervening period. With HALLA BOL, Santoshi is back with what he's best at -- hard-hitting drama.
HALLA BOL is atypical Santoshi product, which re-opens wounds, is raw and hard-hitting and has life-like situations, with a savior who pricks your conscience. Frankly, HALLA BOL is, without an iota of doubt, a film that reflects the current times. You can easily draw parallels with real life. Of course, there're cinematic liberties; it's not a dry film.
In short, we've had enough of meetha [comedies] since the past few weeks, it's time to have something teekha [hard-hitting drama] for a change. HALLA BOL leaves that kind of an impact!
Ashfaque [Ajay Devgan] is a small-town boy aspiring to be a film star in the Hindi film industry. He joins a street theatre group run by a reformed dacoit Sidhu [Pankaj Kapur], who uses street theatre as a medium to bring about an awakening in the masses.
Ashfaque's determined struggle pays off and he gets a break in films. He gets a new screen name -- Sameer Khan. With the passage of time, the roles start becoming better and he moves up the success ladder in a very short time. Soon, he becomes Sameer Khan the superstar -- one who can enact any role with finesse, get under the skin of any and every character with ease and walk away with audience applause.
Sadly, amidst all adulation and applause, he slowly loses his own identity. He forgets his real self and imbibes all characteristics of the various roles essayed by him on screen. Corruption takes over his entire system, alienating him from all loved ones, including his wife Sneha [Vidya Balan].
A shocking incident at a party changes everything, rocking Sameer's lifestyle. He gets caught between his human self on one side and his corrupted superstar image on the other.
Rajkumar Santoshi interweaves a lot of plots in those 2 + hours. It tells you about the degenerating of a small-town person who gets swayed by money and power as he grows big in stature. It tells you about the games the rich and powerful play. It tells you that corruption has become a part of our everyday life. It tells you that a lone voice [raised against injustice] can multiply into millions gradually. It tells you that all's not lost, that honesty, integrity and courage still have an upper hand.
What starts off as a movie about a self-obsessed star changes tracks within 20 minutes of the start, when the rich, spoilt brats shoot a young girl at a well-attended party and everyone stands there as mute spectators. The sequence is simply hair-raising! The gradual change in Ajay's attitude is also well built and the film actually gathers momentum at the intermission point when Ajay decides to testify against the culprits.
But the story actually takes off after the intermission when Ajay, aided by Pankaj Kapur, wages a war against the unscrupulous elements.
The sequence at the minister's palatial residence, when Ajay urinates on the carpet, is an outstanding, clapworthy sequence. The viewers would go in a frenzy at this sequence! Note another scene: The media persons are grilling Ajay if his wife has walked out on him and Vidya shoots back, giving the media a fitting reply. Note yet another sequence: The corrupt minister's sidekick [Abhay Bhargava] trying to bribe Pankaj Kapur and Pankaj's reply. And here's another gem: Pankaj Kapur's lengthy outburst when Ajay lies in the hospital. Brilliant sequences all, which bear the stamp of a genius!
However, the film can do with some trimming in the second hour. A few sequences can be trimmed for a much stronger impact. Also, the climax could've been more powerful.
Santoshi is in form after a gap. The film brings back memories of Santoshi's earlier works. Sukhwinder's music is okay. 'Na Guzre Huwe Pal' is a wonderful track, while the cry of war, the title track, enthuses you. Cinematography [N. Nataraja Subramaniam] is perfect. Dialogues [Santoshi, Ranjit Kapoor] are raw, but appealing. In fact, there are a number of clap-trap lines in the enterprise.
Every performance in HALLA BOL stays etched in your memory. Ajay proves yet again that he's a magnificent actor. He conveys a lot through his expressions. Here's yet another award-worthy performance from one of the finest actors of the country. Vidya's role may not be as substantial as Ajay and Pankaj Kapur, but she's fiery in the sequences. Pankaj is awesome yet again. A power-packed performance. In fact, he's to HALLA BOL what Sunny Deol was to DAMINI. Darshan Jariwala is superb, changing expressions like a chameleon.
Anjan Srivastava manages to create an impact. Abhay Bhargava is efficient. The actress enacting the role of the victim's sister is very good.
The film has a host of stars making appearances, which include Tusshar Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Sridevi and Boney Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Neeraj Vora and Aarti Chhabria.
On the whole, HALLA BOL is a powerful film that has its heart in the right place. At the box-office, HALLA BOL has the power to grow with a strong word of mouth.

Hrithik Roshan had blisters all over his body while shooting for Jodhaa Akbar
Hrithik Roshan had some hot memories to carry back from the sets of Jodhaa Akbar while he was shooting in Rajasthan. The actor had blisters on his entire body after he wore a heavy metal attire for hours on end under the scorching sun, at a place called Sambar, where the climate and topography were extremely harsh.
Says a source from the sets, “Hrithik was shooting at Sambar in Rajasthan where one can’t see anything but plain barren ground. There is not a single tree or a mountain as far as one can see. The climate is horrible with a temperature of 47 degrees centigrade. The hot breeze only made matters worse.”
“Hrithik was shooting there wearing a metal headgear, metal shields on the body and he also had metal chains tied around his hands and legs. The attire was so heavy that it would easily weigh around 40 kgs. Hrithik could barely walk or sit comfortably. There were two men who helped him every time he had to sit or get up,” adds the source.
What made matters worse was that the actor had to enact some emotional scenes. “It was very difficult for Hrithik to shoot in those conditions. Everybody from the unit was feeling sorry for him. He had to shoot some emotional scenes wearing the uncomfortable attire for long hours. But, he continued to shoot. Only when he was done did we see the blisters all over his body,” says the source.

Hrithik Roshan suffered a knee injury while shooting for Jodha Akbar
The extended shooting schedule of Ashutosh Gowarikar’s magnum opus, Jodha Akbar has taken a toll on Hrithik Roshan’s health. He suffered a knee injury while enacting some battle sequences and has been advised bed rest for three months. The actor, who continues to film lest the film’s post-production gets delayed, complained of acute pain recently and moved out of the chalet, which was built for the actor at ND Studios in Karjat.
Hrithik’s spokesperson Ashok Vishodia admits that the actor is in pain. “Hrithik has had a problem with his knees. He has been under treatment for a while. He put up at a hotel in Lonavla this time around.”
Apparently, Hrithik was no too happy with the amenities provided to him at the cottage in ND Studios and eventually, checked into a five-star hotel at Lonavla.
A source close to the actor informs, “The three-hour long journey from his home to the sets at Karjat and back was only adding to his pain. So Hrithik decided to stay at the cottage specially built for him at the ND Studios. Recently, he again complained of acute pain in the knee. That’s when he checked into a five-star hotel at Lonavla for a more comfortable stay.”
When quizzed about it, Nitin Desai denies that Hrithik had any trouble at the chalet and says, “Hrithik has always referred to our cottages as ‘home, away from home’. We are well-equipped and he has had a comfortable stay.”
Hrithik has been shooting for Jodha Akbar for almost a year now. His knee injury has only gone worse because the film’s exhausting sequences didn’t allow him much time to heal his wounds. “Hrithik Roshan had braved a spate of knee injuries during the schedule. He was taking medicines but he didn’t get the much required rest,” says another source.
However, for the next few months, the actor is going to stay put in Mumbai and complete dubbing for the film. He hasn’t signed any new projects yet. His spokesperson says, “He has just completed a song sequence for Jodha Akbar and is back in the city. He might need to go back to Karjat for some patchwork. He is not working on any other films as of now.”

Ranbir Kapoor to star in Ravi Chopra’s next
Looks like Ranbir Kapoor’s kitty is filling up fast. The actor has been roped in for Ravi Chopra’s next film to be directed by Rahul Dholakia (of Parzania fame). Currently, he is shooting for an untitled Yash Raj film starring Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and Minissha Lamba.
Ravi Chopra’s film is a story of two friends. The rest of the cast is yet to be finalised.
Meanwhile, Dholakia takes the safe route and wants the production house to do the talking. He says, “I am in advanced talks with B R Films. We are thinking of casting Ranbir. It would be better if you speak to B R Films about this matter.”
But a friend of Dholakia confirmed that Ranbir will star in a B R Films’ project. “B R Films is very impressed with Dholakia. Ranbir was their first choice. Ranbir too, loved the script,” the friend said.
Ravi Chopra remained unavailable for comment. We sent him a text message, but he did not reply.
The Kapoor scion is rocking not only in his professional life, but in the personal front as well. He is currently dating his Saawariya coactor, Sonam Kapoor.
Dholakia on the other hand, is busy gearing up for Bunty Walia’s film Lamha starring Sanjay Dutt.

Katrina attempts to make her relationship with Salman work again
Although Katrina Kaif and Salman’s Khan’s relationship in is trouble, Katrina is doing her best to make the relationship work again. There were speculations in the media that Katrina didn’t want to go to Salman’s farmhouse at Panvel for Salman’s birthday on December 27 this year. However, Katrina changed her mind at the last minute and reached Salman’s farmhouse on December 26, just a few minutes before midnight.
In fact, Katrina cut shot her shoot for Vipul Shah’s Singh is Kinng so that she does not miss the party. As per schedule, Katrina was supposed to be in Punjab on December 27 shooting for Singh is Kinng, but she made sure that the shoot was postponed so that she could be with Sallu.
On Katrina’s request, Vipul stopped his schedule midway on December 26 and the entire unit returned to Mumbai.
Our source from Singh is Kinng’s unit says, “Katrina told Vipul and Anees that she wanted to spend time with her family and bring in the New Year at home. But the real reason was that she wanted to be with Salman for his birthday party.”
A top actor from the industry, who attended the party, confirmed that Katrina was very much a part of the celebration in Salman’s farmhouse.
Our source says, “Recently, Salman and Katrina’s relationship is in trouble. Things are definitely not the same. There was a time when the two had decided to call off the relationship but as they go back a long way, the two have had long conversations and tried to sort out their differences. And what better time than Salman’s birthday to try and let bygones be bygones?”
When quizzed about it, Vipul and Katrina gave contradictory statements. While Katrina maintained that that the schedule had actually got over on December 26, Vipul said that they changed their plans and that the original plan was to continue shooting in Punjab and not to return to Mumbai midway.
Katrina says, “I did not come to Mumbai especially for Salman’s birthday. Singh is Kinng’s schedule got over on December 26.”
However, Vipul says, “Before Punjab, we shot for about three-and-half months at Goldcoast in Australia. We then started shooting at Punjab and were supposed to be there till January 15. But everybody wanted to be in Mumbai for the New Year. We have taken a break for five days. We will resume shooting on January 3.”

Shah Rukh Khan is a hit in south too
Now this is the story of the day. Guess what? Shah Rukh Khan has gone where no Hindi film actors have gone before. The trade reports coming in from Kerala have it that SRK’s Om Shanti Om has been doing roaring business in Kerala. In fact, it has done better business than their local films released during the same time. King Khan is a big hit down south too. Mind it!
Mallika Sherawat walks out of Kundan Shah’s ‘Masquerade’
Mallika Sherawat, who was very excited about working in Kundan Shah’s film Masquerade, walked out of the film. Touted as one of the most challenging projects of her career, she quit because she had irrevocable creative differences with the director.
Post Mallika’s exit, the producers of the film, The Indian Film Company (TV 18) have also opted out.
Our source says, “Mallika was on a high ever since she heard the script of Kundan Shah’s film. It was indisputably the best role of her career where she was to play a prostitute-turned-politician. She had even agreed to use the typical UP language, laced with colourful epithets. However, in the course of her rehearsals she had serious problems with the director over creative issues.”
He adds, “Mallika was upset because Kundan Shah was adamant about not changing his technical crew. A lot of creative differences cropped up during the shooting of the film and Mallika, who is used to getting her own way, walked out of the film.”
When contacted, Kundan Shah confirmed that Mallika was no longer part of his film. However, he refused to give details as to why Mallika is no longer part of his film. He says “I do not wish to comment on this.”
When quizzed on the issue, an official spokesman of the production house, The Indian Film Company says, “Yes, it is true that Mallika is no longer doing the film. As for us, we have not yet decided whether we will go ahead with the project or not.”

Music Review: Halla Bol
What does one expect from a film which comes with a title Halla Bol. Expectations are mainly centered on hearing a few theme tracks along with situational numbers which come as a part of the film's background score. Of course, one can't expect love songs or item numbers in this Rajkumar Santoshi social which boasts of an impressive lineage of actors like Ajay Devgan, Pankaj Kapoor and Vidya Balan. With Sukhwinder Singh at the helm of composition along with Sameer and Late Shri Dushyant Kumar handling the writing department, one looks forward to a dramatic soundtrack.
As expected 'Jab Tak Hai Dum', the opening track of the album, takes an anthem route. Sukhwinder Singh himself comes behind the mike for this track which also has chorus singers making their presence throughout the 6 minute duration. A number about people coming together and bringing around a revolution in the most adverse of circumstances, 'Jab Tak' is high on orchestra and should appear throughout the narrative to enhance the dramatic appeal of the film. This is why it is not really unexpected to find the 'Theme Music' based on 'Jab Tak Hai Dum' to come at the very end of the album.
Write your own music review of Halla BolNow this one comes as a welcome surprise. Even though the market for 'Shabd Gurbani' would be quite miniscule, especially those who pick up a Bollywood music album for a song-n-dance routine, it is a soothing route that Sukhwinder Singh takes for this devotional track. Extremely easy on ears and serene, 'Shabd Gurbani' moves at a leisurely pace and makes you feel at peace with yourself throughout it's play. Hear it when in mood for some introspection!
Album takes 180 degrees turn with 'Is Pal Ki Soch', a night club track that has Sayali Bhagat making some sensual moves. Harsh Deep, who has been around for a while now and has been making a consistent impression, sings 'Is Pal Ki Soch'. The song has a 70s cabaret feel and though it is not a chartbuster in the making, it is decent enough to keep you engaged as it plays on screen.
A different team comes together for 'More Haji Piya' which has Mehboob Kotwal as the lyricist, Amjad Farid Sabri from Pakistan as the singer and Vanraj Bhatia as the composer. An enjoyable track set in a sufi mode, 'More Haji Piya' is yet another devotional track to arrive in the album after 'Shabd Gurbani'. The track has a feel similar to that of numerous such sufi numbers though it would be interesting to see how 'More Haji Piya' is set in the film.
'Barsan Lagi' is the last track of the album and gets into an altogether different terrain. Based on folk music, this extremely slow moving number with a Punjabi flavor has Sneha Pant coming behind the mike with Sukhwinder Singh also being heard faintly in the background at a place or two. The number incorporates a semi-classical touch to the proceedings as well and at best works as add on to the background score.
Halla Bol isn't the kind of album that makes a splash at the music stands either on their release or even after the release of the film. At maximum, the soundtrack would work for the film as the scenes unfold in the narrative but that's about it. A decent compilation of songs for the situations.

Music Review: Welcome
Akshay Kumar has reached a stage where currently Shah Rukh Khan is. No matter who is his leading lady, no matter which production house he works with, no matter what the film's genre is, no matter who directs the film and no matter who composes for his films - the fact remains that he is audience's darling and would hit gold in each of his films. His great run in last few years is a testimony to that!
This is the reason why even with names like Anees Bazmee (No Entry), Firoz Nadiadwala (Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri), Anil Kapoor, Firoz Khan, Nana Patekar, Katrina Kaif and Mallika Sherawat involved, Welcome would go down as an Akshay Kumar release. With multiple composers like Anand Raaj Anand, Himesh Reshammiya and Sajid-Wajid involved, it only promises to be an added advantage. However, in case of Welcome, it turns out to be a major disadvantage as the music turns out to be way below the mark.
Write your own music review of WelcomeThe start of the album is good. Bring out the trumpets and lay down the red carpet - the celebrations have begun and party is on with the arrival of title song 'Welcome'. The music has a distinct David Dhawan touch to it with the title song of Partner (composed by Sajid-Wajid again) coming closest. Composed as a Western track with a distinct party feel to it, 'Welcome' is a high on orchestra number which has Wajid giving a voiceover and Shaan and Soumya Raoh pairing up to croon the major part of the song. Even though the intermediate portions of the number aren't any great shakes as they turn out to be a routine fare, the music woven around the opening lines if a killer and ensures that there is no dull moment.
It's fast becoming a trend (a healthy one though) to see one composer crooning for a fellow composer. Vishal Dadlani has been doing it for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Anand Raaj Anand has done it for Pritam, Shankar Mahadevan has done this for Vishal-Shekhar and others and now he has done it again for Anand Raaj Anand for the number 'Hoth Rasiley'. Surprisingly, the song turns out to be very ordinary as it is excess of sound and fury which kills the impact.
The tune takes numerous twists and turns and a minute into the song, one tends to loose interest into the proceedings. Shankar comes along with Anand Raaj Anand and Shreya Ghoshal to croon this celebration number with an extremely loud Punjabi celebration setting to it. The only thing which can save the number from being a total disappointment is it's picturisation/choreography which may be done in a comic setting.
With Anand Raaj Anand playing the dual role of a composer as well as a singer for this song with Shweta Pandit joining in, 'Tera Sarafa' again belongs completely to the David Dhawan school of music. Nothing surprising here since Anees Bazmee has been a script/screenplay writer for numerous Dhawan movies in the past.
Coming back to the song, 'Tera Sarafa' again follows an unapologetic 'masti-dhamaal' mode with a focus mainly on getting foot tapping beats and keeping the heat on for fast paced proceedings. The USP of the song is Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar shaking a leg with Mallika Sherawat, though one wonders if the song would have gone any further distance if not for this unique pairing! Ultimately 'Tera Sarafa' is the kind which is heard today, enjoyed mainly due to choreography and forgotten the moment film is off the screens!
Oops, now what's that!? By the time an elaborate 30 second saxophone piece is through and one settles down to hear something soothing, the 90s style arrangements start scaring a listener. If this is not enough, what follows next truly catches you by surprise as Himesh Reshammiya (doubling up as a composer and singer) croons the word 'Insha Allah' in the highest possible pitch!
Heavy arrangements, as has been the hallmark of the album so far, doesn't spare a listener here as well even as Shaan and Akruti Kakkar come together with Krishna to croon some of the most ordinary/pedestrian lyrics from a music album of 2007. Just hear this one - 'Ab Jism o Jaan Mein, Dil Ke Jahaan Mein, Hai Tera Welcome, Aa Bhi Jaa'! Aided by 'dhol' beats, 'Insha Allah' turns out to be a routine 'masala' number which work more visually (that too due to Akshay's presence) than audio-wise!
'Kola Laka Vellari' - Now this is yet another number where one exclaims - Oops, now what's that!? Frankly, one can't actually comprehend what exactly 'Kola Laka Vellari' stands for. In fact even Google doesn't! The only good thing about this song is that Himesh Reshammiya is far subdued while crooning this one. A moderately paced song, the song has a mix of Western and Indian arrangements though in a trademark Reshammiya setting that made him a household name in last couple of years. A love song with sad undertones to it, 'Kola Laka Vellari' is barely decent but that's about it.
Anand Raaj Anand returns after a couple of tunes by Himesh Reshammiya and creates 'Uncha Lamba', the opening tune of which lifts has it's references in 'Makhna' [Bade Miyan Chote Miyan]. A number which could well find references in number of Punjabi-fusion-folk tracks, 'Uncha Lamba' has predominant Western arrangements which go well with the current on-screen image of Akshay Kumar. With Kalpana as his duet partner, Anand Raaj Anand gets into a romantic mode with this yet another 'masala' track which barely sustains itself for the situation and that's about it.
With great power comes great responsibilities - This can well be true for Akshay Kumar now as well! As mentioned at the very beginning, any film starring Akshay Kumar today is THE Akshay Kumar film. Whatever good or bad, it is attributed mainly to the superstar than anyone else. This is why even the music of Welcome, which is extremely ordinary in any case, will be termed as nothing less than disappointing due to high standards set for an Akshay Kumar film. Though thankfully the film seems to be highly interesting, Akshay fans would have to wait for Tashan and Singh Is Kinng in anticipation of some good music.

Top-10 anticipated soundtracks of 2008
2008 has begun and from jotting down entries for what worked and what didn't in the year gone by, we move on to what is expected from the months to follow. So here we kick start with 10 of the most anticipated soundtracks of year 2008, all in alphabetical order:
Alladin (Vishal-Shekhar)
Ever since Vishal-Shekhar made a mega impression with their soundtrack of Jhankaar Beats years back, they have been consistent with a mega hit album every year. In 2007, it was Om Shanti Om; and 2008 looks interesting too, with the composer-jodi reuniting with their Jhankaar Beats director Sujoy Ghosh. For this fantasy cum adventure light hearted entertainer set in the contemporary times, the composers promise to go whacky in a big way and come up with some of their most innovative work. If some of the songs composed with Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt as singers are any indications, followers of Vishal-Shekhar have some treat coming their way!
Chandni Chowk to China (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Bappi Lahiri, Kailash Kher)
Director Nikhil Advani has never got it wrong when it comes to music of his films - Kal Ho Na Ho and Salaam-E-Ishq are a testimony to that. Producer Rohan Sippy was the first to go truly innovative with Bluffmaster where he came up with an original soundtrack that has an international appeal. Meanwhile composer trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have been enjoying a rocking time at the music stands for years now. When all of these come together for a film which stars Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone in the lead, it becomes an irresistible combo which has very less chances of failure. A title like Chandni Chowk to China with musical inputs by Bappi Lahiri and Kailash Kher only help the cause further.
Ghajini Remake (A.R. Rahman)
Ok, so no one knows till date about the eventual title of this film which is so far being referred to as 'Ghajini remake'. But naam mein kya rakha hai? Especially, when the project brings together professionals like Aamir Khan and A.R. Rahman. The original Tamil film 'Ghajini' had chartbuster tracks by Harris Jayaraj (who till date is known for his excellent score in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein.) Though Rahman has stepped in for the Hindi version, no one has doubts around the eventual product that would be up for grabs this year.
God Tussi Great Ho (Sajid-Wajid)
No one, just about no one gave Partner much of a chance when it came to the music of the film. Well, all of that changed at two stages; first when the album met with a decent reception when showcased on the stands and later when the film became a mega hit and the music an overnight range. So why are we talking about Partner here? Because God Tussi Great Ho has the team of Sajid-Wajid composing for a Salman Khan starrer again and that too for the directorial debut of a man who has been behind writing numerous non-stop fun entertainers - Rumi Jaffrey. Yes, the film has been in the making for long but there are good expectations of the music of God Tussi Great Ho managing to hold on it's own.
Kambakth Ishq (Anu Malik)
If Sabir Khan's direction for the promotional music video of title song in end credit rolls of Heyy Babyy was any indication, the man certainly knows his craft and has a taste for some zany music! In his debut film as a director, Sabir has managed to get top notch actors like Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor on board. Of course, with a willing producer like Sajid Nadiadwala who has a tremendous success rate behind him (and some chartbuster soundtracks too), things only become easier. This is going to be yet another biggie starring Akshay that warrants a popular soundtrack.
Karzzzz (Himesh Reshammiya)
There are little doubts that the man with the cap won't hit gold with this one! One cannot ideally go wrong with the soundtrack for a film that boasts of a musical theme, has been adored for more than two decades and gives the actor/composer/singer a platform to go all out in creating and recreating the tunes. With backing of a willing music company which also produces the film, Karzzzz has all in it to bring together the off-screen and on-screen persona of Himesh Reshammiya and get an entertaining musical score running for the man's target audience. Chalo ek baar phir ho jaaye - 'Ek Haseena Thi'!
Krrazy 4 (Rajesh Roshan)
Rajesh Roshan creates blockbuster score every time he composes for his brother's film. With Krrazy 4, he is expected to bounce back in a big way with the songs for this riotous comedy that stars Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Rajpal Yadav and Suresh Menon as the Krrazy 4. Expect a whacky score from this entertainer that would have item songs featuring Hrithik Roshan and Rakhi Sawant.
Singh Is Kinng (Pritam)
Pritam has been the most successful composer of 2007. With the Welcome, Katrina Kaif and Akshay are turning out to be a dependable 'jodi'. And last but not the least; the film comes with Punjabi overtones, as conveyed through the film's title. Need we say more! Singh Is Kinng should be a kind of album that talks right from the top!
Tashan (Vishal-Shekhar)
The album has to live up it's name! When a film is called Tashan (which stands for 'Style'), it better have songs that spell 'tashan'! With Vishal-Shekhar at helm, one can feel confident of this happening as there have been number of instances when the composer duo has rose up to the occasion. Also, law of averages should be catching up with Yash Raj Films who haven't tasted success ever since the title song of Chak De India became an anthem. A cast like Akshay Kumar, Anil Kaooor, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor should only help the project further!
Yuvraaj (A.R. Rahman)
Mention of Yuvraaj may be coming at the very end due to alphabetical ordering but it sits right up there if one looks at anticipation quotient! Subhash Ghai and Rahman coming together is big enough news, especially since it will be after 9 long years that the two would be coming together after Taal (Kisna had Ismail Darbar sharing credits with Rahman). With the film's subject being musical, Gulzar saab writing lyrics, Shiamak Davar as the choreographer and actors like Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor and Katrina Kaif coming together, Yuvraaj is going to be magnum opus of 2008!
Jodhaa Akbar audio release: A Grand Spectacle
“Jodhaa Akbar is finally releasing on September 15,” said director Ashutosh Gowariker at an opulent music launch of the film at a plush Mumbai hotel yesterday. “No…actually the release date as of now is February 15 and this time I’m serious,” Ashutosh corrected himself (with a chuckle) to a collective sigh from the gathered media and other dignitaries. Present at the rich-n-ostentatious occasion was of course the lead pair of Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, producer Ronnie Screwvala, Amitabh Bachchan, Javed Akhtar, A R Rahman, Sonu Sood, Sonu Nigam, Madhushree, Jaaved Ali, Shatrughan Sinha, Akbar Khan, Sanjay Khan, Ila Arun, Zayed Khan and a host of other celebrities. The event was anchored by ravishing Anjana Sukhani and the music was launched by Maharani of Jaipur Rani Padmini, a direct descendant of Jodhaa Bai.
Flowing red curtains curled as if in a bun of hair, brilliantly scarlet ‘Paalki’ with coquettish secrecy, shimmering inside, authoritarian throne of the King of Kings, swords hanging the fate of destiny in balance and pristine music gently soothing the senses. The ambience was perfect for promoting a hugely mounted film which seems to be a labour of painstaking research, minute detailing and incalculable hard work. Maybe, a fitting tribute to Akbar, who in poet-lyricist-scriptwriter Javed Akhtar’s words, “is a symbol of Indian synthesis who was working towards a Secular society in India around 500 years ago.”
Alright, let’s bring you some more highlights from the evening and also a brief curtain raiser of what the music is all about. Apart from the usual thank-you’s (Ashutosh had a list as long as the duration of his films) and detailed-hugging-sessions, there are a couple of information-nuggets that you shall find very interesting. Ashutosh Gowariker disclosed that Amitabh Bachchan is doing a voice over in the film (Remember Big B’s evocative baritone set the tone-n-tenor in the eponymous Lagaan). Also, Shotgun Sinha’s lovely wife Poonam Sinha is making a comeback to films as she plays Akbar’s mother Hameeda Bano (she has acted in films like Jigri Dost and Sabak three decades ago).
The Audio Visual on the two big screens showcased the five songs from Jodhaa Akbar. ‘Kahne ko Jashn-e-bahaara hai, ishq ye dekh ke hairaan hai, Phool se khushbu khafa khafa hai gulshan mein, Chupa hai koi ranj fiza ki chilman mein,. Rookie singer Jaaved Ali will be a big name after this scintillatingly restrained number that teases-n-sprinkles romance in a careful-n-collected manner. Love notes on Aishwarya’s lips perfectly compliments the sincerity-soaked eyes of Hrithik Roshan. Stunningly shot, this one’s a breathtakingly beautiful aural-n-visual experience.
‘Khwaja Mere Khwaja’ is a traditional sufi song sung by AR Rahman reeking of profuse spiritual connotations of love that knows no boundaries. ‘Mann Mohana’ is a bhajan attempting to bridge the gap between Hindi and Urdu or in other words a cross cultural union. Singer Bela Shinde will be much-in-demand for she has a unique sonorous quality something similar to singer Chitra (Kahna Hi Kya from Bombay besides many more). As soon as ‘Inn Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein’ starts flowing one realizes there are good singers and then there’s Sonu Nigam. He takes Rahman’s superb melody to an even greater height due to that deep-sense-of-emotion that is required to be expressed. It seems Hrithik-Ash are meant to be lovers. For the world stops when the warm waves travel through thin air, setting the hearts on fire! Let the moments flow eternally…
Finally, the moment ‘Azeem-o-Shaan Shahenshah’ ends, there are dual emotions of a whistle-n-a-long-spell-of-clapping. Mammoth drum beats, bugles, huge choruses, a spectacular visual experience (colourful-human-circles making amazingly symmetrical patterns shot from the top) and the sheer sense of wonder: How did they manage to pull off such an epic song like this? Phew! A R Rahman, Javed Akhtar and Ashutosh Gowariker take a bow…
The Audio Release of Jodhaa Akbar was a carefully crafted and well managed event. One error on the part of the organizers that needs to be pointed is that they should have utilized the two giant screens for displaying the images of what-was-going-on at the stage. For the distance for the naked eye to decipher the proceedings was quite a bit. The good news for you guys is that in the next few days we shall treat you with long-n-detailed video interviews with Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Ashutosh Gowariker, A R Rahman and Javed Akhtar. For the time being, can someone play the lovely songs once again…

Sameer cuts down work because of Himesh
Thanks to Himesh Reshammiya's decision to curtail his work, Bollywood's most prolific lyricist Sameer Anjaan who has written over 5000 songs, has reduced his workload. "You see Himesh and I had formed a team. I did some of my finest and most popular work recently for Himesh in films from Tere Naam to Aap Kaa Surroor: The Moviee. But now that he has decided to compose only for his own starrers, I too have been forced to slow down. Yes, I'm doing the words for Himesh's three films Karzzzz, Kajraare and A Love Iissshtory.”
For Karzzzz, Sameer will re-write the whole Anand Bakshi theme song 'Ek Haseena Thi.' "I'll take the opening line as a starting point and then weave my own words." Quite a tribute, coming from a self-confessed fan of Majrooh Sultanpuri and Anand Bakshi. "Look at their body of work. How prolific they were! They were poetic and yet so accessible to the common man. That's what I've been aiming to do all along, although I've been criticized and condemned for playing to the galleries. But when today Gulzar Saab writes populist numbers like 'Ticket to Hollywood' and 'Beedi' he's praised for moving with the times. When I've been doing the same, I was accused of making compromises. But it's very important to keep up with the times. For a recent film Phir Hera Pheri, I wrote 'All Day All Night' which was in four languages Rajasthani, English, Hindi and Punjabi….That's the effect of globalization on cinema and our music. That's how today's youngsters speak. That's the spirit one has to capture in our film songs." Sameer lights up like a gallery of diyas when he talks about his latest triumph in Saawariya.
"By the grace of God, the songs in Saawariya were appreciated for their poetry. When I am pulled up for the lack of poetry in today's songs, I want to know where are the creative artistes like Sanjay Leela Bhansali who demand and expect poetry in their songs. When I was writing poetry for films like Aashiqui and Saajan in the 1990's, I also wrote 'Main to bhelpuri kha raha tha' in Coolie No 1. Because that was a song for a street-smart guy. One has to write according to the demand of the character and film. I know my father (Anjaan) wrote poetry like 'Chandan Sa Badan' in 'Saraswatichandra'. But that was the demand of the times and the character. Today when Sanjay Bhansali offers me a chance to write songs like 'Jab Se Tere Naina' and 'Sawar Sawar Gayi', I do it happily."
Sameer fondly recalls that historic moment when Sanjay Bhansali called him. "He told me there are two songs of mine that tilted the scale towards me when there were so many more distinguished poets wanting to do the lyrics of Saawariya. Those songs were 'Tumse Milna Baatein Karna' in Tere Naam and 'Mohabbatein Lutaoonga' for Abhijeet Sawant."
Sameer wrote the first lyric 'Masha Allah' for Saawariya in three days. "That's how long it took me to write each of the lyrics for Saawariya. I'm a fast worker. And I've survived so long because I know the art of writing lyrics. It's not enough to be a poet. You've to know how to connect your words with the common man."

A documentary film on RD Burman
“Mere saare compositions ek taraf….’Tere bina zindagi se koi shikva to nahin’ ek taraf,” said master singer-composer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to one of his friends highlighting the brilliance of evergreen music composer RD Burman who is having his 14th death anniversary today. One of his fans, Brahmanand Singh has recently completed a two hour long documentary film Pancham Unmixed: Mujhe Chalte Jaana Hai on RD Burman for which he has interviewed some of the most revered names in the Film Industry like Asha Bhonsle, Shammi Kapoor, Gulzar, Rishi Kapoor, Pyarelal, Javed Akhtar, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Vishal Bharadwaj, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Shantanu Moitra, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Hari Prasad Chaurasia and loads more.
“Today over 60% remixed songs are RD Burman numbers. People are forgetting who made them, how they were made. People know the songs from the names of the DJs attached to them. If a film like this is not made then the original composer would be completely forgotten,” Singh claims. But is there any other reason for making a film such as this? “No authentic work has been done on him. He is such an important landmark in Indian films. I’ve spent two years on the film talking to many of the people who were either close to him or have followed his work closely. It also has some of the very rare photographs, films clippings.”
Brahmanand Singh who has earlier made documentaries on Classical singer Asgari Bhai, Alzheimers Disease and Ragpickers is also looking forward to directing a comedy feature film. As for Pancham Unmixed: Mujhe Chalte Jaana Hai, he believes that since he has shot it on HDV, it deserves to get a theatrical release and he would want a big production house to take over the marketing of his film. We at IndiaFM Broadband shall premiere the first exclusive clip from this documentary tomorrow. So, all you RD fans don’t forget to make a date with us!

Now 'Jab We Met' in South languages
All of us loved JAB WE MET, didn’t we? Well, one of the finest films of 2007 will now be remade in four South Indian languages -- Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam -- by corporate entity Moser Baer. In fact, Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision, the producers of JAB WE MET, and Moser Baer have shook hands already and would be signing the deal in the next few days. The star cast and directors of the four versions are yet to be finalized.
Meanwhile, Moser Baer is ready to take its first step in Hindi films in 2008. Their first production SHAURYA, directed by Samar Khan, will hit the screens on April 4, followed by SANKAT CITY, directed by Pankaj Advani, which is slated for May/June release. “SANKAT CITY is two hours of non-stop dhamaal, starring Kay Kay Menon, Rimi Sen, Anupam Kher and Chunkey Pandey. It’s a joint venture production with Anubhav Sinha,” Harish Dayani of Moser Baer informs me.
Moser Baer has also signed Priyadarshan for a film, which should roll in the early part of 2009.

'Taare Zameen Par', 'Welcome' break yearend jinx
New Delhi, Jan 11 (IANS) The jinx of yearend Bollywood releases falling flat at the box office has been broken after five long years by Aamir Khan's directorial debut film "Taare Zameen Par" and Anees Bazmi's "Welcome".
Technically Anurag Kashyap's animation film "Return of Hanuman" marked the yearend. But according to trade pundits, in the multi-starrer feature films category "Taare Zameen Par" and "Welcome" raked in the moolah.
In 2002, "Kaante" and "Chalo Ishq Ladaayen" were the last releases of the year. Both turned turtle. In 2003, Rajkumar Hirani's blockbuster "Munnabhai MBBS" - the second last release of the year - sparked hope, but the year closed with "LOC: Kargil" that proved to be a dud. The end of 2004 saw biggies "Swades", "Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Sathiyon" and "Dil Maange More" sinking without a trace, while the 2005 yearend disappointments were "Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi" and "Anjaane - The Unknown" and in 2006 "Bhagam Bhag" and "I See You" met with an equally sad fate.
"Taare..." narrates the story of a dyslexic child and has grossed about Rs.20 million. "Welcome" treats the audiences to a wacky comedy that loosely borrows from Hollywood caper "Mickey Blue Eyes" and has crossed the Rs.43-million mark two weeks after its release.
Film critics believe that if the content is good, the film does well, unaffected by the quarter of the year it is released in.
"I think the jinx factor is in our minds. It is an excuse. Why these films did well was because of their quality content. 'Welcome' is a perfect entertainer while 'Taare...' is an emotional one," trade analyst Taran Adarsh told IANS.
"Good content always wins. Consumers want good content, if you give them that it does not matter whether the film releases at yearend or not," added Gautam Dutt, CEO of cine media PVR Ltd.
Movie buff Ashutosh Singh agreed, saying: "To me, it doesn't makes a difference whether a movie is released in the starting, mid or end of the year. As a movie buff, if the film is good I would watch it unfazed by the time of its release."
Putting light on another facet, film critic Harish Chandra Yadav said that apart from content, marketing strategy plays a very important role in the success of a film.
"Marketing strategy and film promotion contributes largely to the success of a film. For instance, like 'Taare...', Kaushik Roy's 'Apna Aasman' was also based on a similar subject. Since he is a newcomer and because of lack of promotion, the movie went unnoticed," explained Yadav.

Gouri Tonk resurfaces with ‘Jhoomein Jiya Re’.
After her splendid spell in the 2nd season of ‘Nach Baliye’, gorgeous Gouri is now back with Deeya and Tony Singh’s ‘Jhoomein Jiya Re’ on Zee TV.Dance is Gouri’s passion in life and is also one of the main reasons behind her signing on ‘Jhoomein Jiya Re’ as the show revolves around dance. Kiran Garewal is the character that Gouri is enacting; she is shown as a girl, who has a forte for dance and she loves to live life freely without any hassles. Ever since she embraced motherhood, Gouri has been very choosy about the roles she picks but, now with daughter Pari in her post-toddler phase the actress sure can put her dancing shoes on and go ‘Jhoomein Jiya Re’.
Harsh Chayya to play a ‘gay’ fashion designer.
He impressed you with his executive appeal in ‘Corporate’ and from the board rooms Harsh will now be seen making a switch to the ramp. Bagging the role was not an easy one for Harsh as Madhur never thought he could play a ‘gay’ character. Harsh was however; head strong to get the role so he went shopping and bought himself hair wigs and make-up. Getting into the skin of character was important for Harsh so the actor even plucked his eyebrows and shaped them to give a feminine appeal. Harsh dressed as a gay man and shot a home video on himself; he even edited the entire video on his own.
Sandip Soparrkar hits a jackpot as after Shakira and Beyonce its Madonna.
How many times can a man possibly get lucky? Well, in Sandip’s case the list is endless as after teaching Shakira to sway and Beyonce to boogie it was his turn to make Madonna groove as well. Sandip was specifically invited to Jaipur by Madonna as the pop diva wanted to take salsa lessons from the dance guru. Sandip is India’s first male artist to have adopted a child, and Madonna was aware of the fact so she ended up extending the invitation to Sandip’s son Arjun as well. In fact, when Beyonce visited India a couple of month’s ago Sandip joked of Madonna being on his wish list, and little did he know that his wish would come true. So Sandip, any more names on your wish list? Guess not as it can’t get any bigger than Madonna.
Arnold Schwarzenegger denies being in ‘Kambath Ishq’ with Akshay Kumar.
Producer Sajid Nadiawala is busy announcing that he has roped in Beyonce and Arnold for his next movie ‘Kambath Ishq’; according to him the famous faces of Hollywood would make special appearances in his flick. But the story seems to be different on the other side of the fence as Arnold Schwarzenegger is in a complete shock and has put all rumors to rest by making a formal statement that he is not making any appearances in the movie. The statement was issued by his media department and it reads, “Whom it may concern: Governor Schwarzenegger has not signed on to be in any upcoming Sajid Nadiawala movie. We would like you to please publish a correction.”We were shocked to read this as Sajid Nadiawala is busy bragging about Arnold agreeing to shoot for his movie. Now, Arnold has denied but, what about Beyonce? Well, hope it’s not another ‘liar-liar pants on fire’ for Sajid.

12 weeks, 5 artists and Salman Khan’s wax effigy is all ready to be unveiled.
He is undoubtedly Bollywood’s best body and wonder how close the artists were to making a wax statue of Salman Khan, a man whom God has made just perfect. Wax is mixed with silicon to get the perfect six abs. Besides his perfect physique, Salman is famous for his sexy eyes as well so the Tussuads team has employed laser technology to give the precise glitter. Salman Khan’s statue will be unveiled on January 15th and Katrina is trying her best to work with her dates so she can be with Salman in London as she is currently occupied shooting for ‘Singh Is Kinng;. So let’s hope that Salman’s statue bears resemblance to the actor unlike Big B, Ash and SRK, and we sure would love to see Sallu’s ‘Partner’ on his side.We meant Kat and not Govinda.
